Solo Exhibition

Brownsville Museum of Fine Art,
Texas, 2024

This exhibition explores themes of time, memory, and life events that shape personal transformation. It is part of an unfinished narrative that reflects on Oxana Kovalchuk’s roots and ancestors, unfolding through discoveries of diverse cultures, languages, and artistic forms.

Born in Kazakhstan, Kovalchuk’s early years were influenced by her grandparents’ forced displacement from their birthplaces – an event that left a lasting imprint on her memory and family history. For Oxana, memory is vital, preserving connections to the past, family traditions, and cultural heritage. However, she acknowledges that memory is complex, often altered over time, blending with imagination and reinterpretation.

Having lived in four different countries, Oxana has absorbed and integrated various influences into her mixed media works and glass collages. These pieces layer images, textures, and objects like threads and old family photos, creating a visual diary that captures significant events and people. The layering in her work symbolizes transformation and adaptation, illustrating how memories and impressions intertwine to form a cohesive picture of her life.

This exhibition embodies Kovalchuk’s ongoing journey, highlighting the enduring value of past, present, and future events as her perception of the world continues to evolve.
